A Book of Tales
A Book of Tales
This manuscript contains a collection of Hebrew moral tales, copied in a Persian-style semi-cursive Hebrew script. The luxurious design of the pages features text on each folio framed by an unusual pitcher-shaped design outlined in silver and surrounded by brightly colored floral motifs. The tales themselves are drawn from classical rabbinic sources and medieval storytelling traditions. Scholars have suggested that the distinctive imagery may indicate that the manuscript was created for a Jew from Kurdistan. For centuries, Kurdish Jews lived in mountain villages across Iraq, Iran, Turkey, and Syria, preserving ancient traditions, Neo-Aramaic speech, and distinctive customs. Most emigrated to Israel in the mid-20th century, where their cultural heritage endures.
