Mahzor

The word “Mahzor,” means “cycle" and is familiar to most Jews as the term used for the prayer book for the High Holidays and festivals. However, in medieval times, the term Mahzor was used to refer to prayer books that contained the complete cycle of prayers for the entire year. Eventually, prayer books which included only the standard weekday and Sabbath prayers became called "siddurim" from the Hebrew root word seder for "order," as they lay out the order of the daily and Sabbath prayers.  The term "mahzor" became reserved to refer to compilations of prayers for special holidays such as the High Holy Days and the festivals throughout the year (such as Sukkot, Passover and Shavuot).
