This handwritten letter by the eminent poet and philosopher, Judah Halevi (1075-1141) was sent to Halfon ben Netanel, an international trader whose business activities extended from Western Africa and Spain to Yemen and India. Halfon, who lived in Cairo (when not traveling) was well-educated, and an admirer and good friend of the poet. In this letter Judah informs Halfon that he is returning a dinar which Halfon had donated for the ransom of a woman in prison, as the coin was not good. Halevi also notes that he and his business partner have sent Halfon a large shipment of 500 sheets of paper— presumably referring to a commercial transaction in progress.
