The Hebrew Technical Institute was founded in 1884, “for promoting industrial education among Jewish boys . . . to wean away the immigrants from the needle industries” and to teach them “American trades, American technical processes and methods.” Five years later the Educational Alliance was established to provide “education to the ignorant, recreation to the weary, and the knowledge of American institutions to the foreigner.” This souvenir volume commemorates a gala fair held in 1895 at Madison Square Garden to raise money on behalf of these two institutions.

Proceeds amounted to $150,000, of which one third was allotted to the Institute. It used this money to erect a five-story building on Stuyvesant Street to house its classrooms and facilities.
