This illustrated prayer book, containing penitential prayers (selichot) for recitation throughout the year, was made for a synagogue in Metz. Many of its pages are richly decorated, and it is finely executed throughout. The page on view includes the penitential prayer for the fast day of the 17th of Tammuz. The images on this folio make reference to two of the many calamities that are traditionally said to have occurred on the 17th of Tammuz: the tablets containing the Ten Commandments were broken, and the city walls of Jerusalem were breached, leading to the destruction of the Second Temple (depicted at left).
