This Book of Psalms, the first polyglot Biblical work published, contains the Hebrew text, six translations and, in the last column on the right, Latin glosses. In gloss “D,” on the Psalmist’s reference to “the end of the earth” (Ps. 19:5), the editor, Bishop Augustino Giustiniani of Nebbio, commented:

“In our time . . . through the wonderful attempt of Christopher Columbus of Genoa, another world, as it were, has been discovered and added to the Christian community. Indeed, since Columbus proclaimed frequently that God had selected him in order that this prophecy might be fulfilled through him, I have not considered it inappropriate to insert his biography here.”

In a gloss that extended over the next four pages, readers were treated to the first printed biography of Christopher Columbus.
