A “megillah” is a scroll; the Megillah is the scroll containing the text of the biblical Book of Esther, which is read publicly each year on the holiday of Purim.

Because megillot often lack scribal inscriptions, they can be difficult to date or localize with certainty. However, by comparing this scroll with decorated Jewish marriage contracts—which consistently record the date and city of production—it is possible to identify Morocco as the most likely place where this work was created. Its vibrant red and green colors and decorative motifs, as well as its lack of figurative representation, are characteristic of ketubbot and megillot produced in Morocco during the 19th century.
