Shechitah Certificate for Samuel Luzzatto
Shechitah Certificate for Samuel Luzzatto
This elaborately decorated certificate was granted to Samuel Luzzatto, a member of an illustrious Italian rabbinic family. Issued by Rabbi Simcha Calimani of Venice, it certifies Luzzatto as both a shohet (ritual slaughterer) and a bodek (examiner). Centered above the text, two putti flank the Luzzatto family emblem. One holds a knife representing his role of shohet, and the other a pair of animal lungs, symbolizing his role as bodek. Illustrations of the many animals that he was permitted to slaughter surround the text, with mammals on the right and fowl on the left. Luzzatto is advised to review the laws from time to time “because one is prone to forget.” Rabbi Calamani noted that “...I am sure he will do so.” Luzzatto himself signed this document in 1778, four years after it was granted.
