This prayer book, known as a tiklal, reflects the liturgical traditions of Yemenite Jewry. It includes daily, Sabbath, and festival prayers, along with abundant liturgical poetry, composed in Hebrew, with portions in Aramaic and Judeo-Arabic. Its script and format follow Yemenite conventions. Even in the late 17th century, Hebrew texts were still hand-copied in Yemen as the printing press had not yet arrived there. The page shown here contains liturgical poetry for the holiday of Simchat Torah—the Jewish festival celebrating the beginning of the annual cycle of reading the Torah. The directions for the recitation of this poem are written in Judeo-Arabic.
