By the late 1840s the founding of hospitals in America was increasingly a denominational endeavor. It thus behooved Jewish communities to establish their own medical facilities to guarantee that Jewish patients would be cared for according to the dictates of their faith. Accordingly, Jews Hospital was founded in New York in 1852. Fourteen years later it was reorganized as a non-sectarian institution and renamed Mt. Sinai Hospital. As New Yorks Jewish community grew larger and became more diverse during the ensuing decades, it founded additional hospitals. On the eve of World War II the city boasted twelve hospitals under Jewish auspices.
